Donation to The Friends Foundation -- Hays County Precinct 4 Commissioner Karen Ford presents a $1500 check to The Friends Foundation's Vice President (L-R) Karen Glass, board member Grace Dormont and Treasurer Debra Harris. The donation comes from funds remaining at the end of fiscal 2010 from the Pct. 4 office budget. The monies will be used to supplement a $5,000 grant from Hays County awarded to The Friends Foundation and will help to purchase health screening equipment for seniors in the area. Karen Ford announces her re-election bid to serve a second term as Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 4

Dripping Springs, TX. Karen Ford announces her re-election bid to serve a second term as Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 4. “This is an exciting time to be in public office in Hays County,” Ms. Ford said. “As we continue to grow and attract new businesses and citizens, it’s important to have someone in office who is committed to responsible growth and who believes that economic development and protection of natural resources go hand in hand.”

Since taking office in 2007, Commissioner Ford has applied her energy, passion and knowledge to tackle the challenges and opportunities that growth brings. She is particularly proud of the $30 million in voter-approved bonds (May 2007) to fund parks, open spaces and native habitat. She helped to bring county funds to the purchase of Dripping Springs’ new Harrison Ranch Park and to make timely improvements to sports fields for DSYSA. She represented the Commissioners Court in a public stakeholder process to develop a Regional Habitat Conservation Plan, currently under review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department. Ms. Ford was also a driving force behind the recently adopted Hays County Development Regulations, ending a 3-year public process and resulting in what is now touted as the most comprehensive and progressive set of county regulations in Texas.

Air quality has been an issue of particular concern to Commissioner Ford. She serves on the region’s Clean Air Coalition, and on the executive committee and board of the Clean Air Force of Central Texas. “It is of utmost importance to keep this region and Hays County out of non-attainment of the federal air quality standard. That would have devastating consequences on our ability to attract new business and clean industry to this county,” Ms. Ford said. “I’ve worked to bring awareness to our local cement and asphalt industries. They are now partners in our clean air efforts. Mobility solutions and new modes of public transportation are critical to solving air pollution problems as well. We will continue to work diligently on this front.”

Other areas of interest and effort include water quality and quantity. Commissioner Ford convened the Water Conservation Working Group earlier this year with a focus on rainwater harvesting education and incentives. Additionally, Ms. Ford supports the efforts of the Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District to continue studying the aquifer, to educate citizens and to manage a threatened and declining groundwater table. “When you keep putting more straws in the ground, you’re not helping the folks who live and work here now,” said Ms. Ford. “There’s a limit to what our aquifer can sustain, and we may be there now. All of us can afford to be much more conservative with how we use water – and I think we’ll see rainwater as the most practical fix in the short term.” Also on this front, Hays County has funded and received grant monies for two important studies currently underway – one for water and wastewater facilities planning, the other for a regional drainage plan.

“This is more than a full-time job for me,” said Commissioner Ford. “Everyday presents something new, and we work hard to be responsive and responsible to the citizens and community we serve. I would be most honored to continue this work for another term.”
